CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

The next morning, she wasn’t so carefree.

Her head certainly hurt, and her mouth was dry. She woke up to see Tom Pierce standing over her.

‘What the fuck are you doing in my room?’

‘Making sure you’re alive. I was thinking of dragging you out of bed.’

‘Do it, pal, and you’ll lose an arm. At least.’

Pierce grinned, none the worse for wear after his night of drinking. ‘That might be worth the risk.’

Alicia blinked up at him. Was the guy flirting with her? To be fair, she was an aggressive, confident woman, not the kind of figure men flirted with and hoped to get away with it. She’d pretty much forgotten the art of flirting. It wasn’t really in her nature. Alicia said what she meant, straight out, and to hell with anyone who didn’t like it.

She stared up at Pierce now. ‘Are you still here?’

‘Still contemplating.’

‘Go contemplate somewhere else. I need to get up and get dressed.’

‘Breakfast in five minutes.’

‘Wait,’ Alicia said as Pierce turned to leave the room. ‘Have you heard anything about Kalani?’

‘That’s the reason for the rude interruption,’ Pierce said. ‘Get dressed.’

Ten minutes and a forty-five second shower later, Alicia was walking into the kitchen where Alakai had laid out a few plates of pastries and made a large pot of fresh coffee. Alicia helped herself with a grateful nod to their host. Around the table, the others already sat munching their breakfast.

‘So,’ Pierce said once Alicia had seated herself. ‘I’ve received intel from a friend that Kalani has landed on Lanai.’

Alicia didn’t recognise the name. ‘Lanai. Is that another island?’

‘He’s definitely doing the rounds,’ Crouch said.

‘Lanai is the smallest publicly accessible island in the chain,’ Pierce said. ‘With only one town of note, that’s the imaginatively titled Lanai City. It’s known locally as the Pineapple Island because once it was an island-wide pineapple plantation.’

‘And Kalani has gone there now?’ Alicia asked. ‘Doesn’t he see that the less inhabited the island is, the easier it is to find him?’

‘He’s on the run,’ Pierce said. ‘Being chased by killers. People don’t think too clearly in that situation.’

Alicia inclined her head, accepting that. From what she had heard and seen of Kalani, the guy seemed like a normal civilian and, to be fair, civilians were pretty predictable. They mostly thought the same way. And a lot of it had to do with the shows they watched on television.

‘Do you know where on Lanai?’ Caitlyn asked.

Pierce laughed at that. ‘You won’t believe it after what I just said, but he’s hiding out in an old pineapple plantation.’

Alicia closed her eyes, fearing for the kid. ‘This time, we can’t slip up,’ she said. ‘We have to save him.’

‘Are you ready to go?’ Pierce asked.

Alicia nodded. ‘Just point me in the right direction.’

They moved out. Alakai drove them to Kaunakakai, where they rented a fast motorboat. Luckily, Lanai was right next to Molokai, just a quick hop and a skip across the waves. Alicia was inside their rental boat, backpack fastened tightly, standing and holding on to a support by the time Pierce was ready to set off.
